Golden Dorado (Salminus Maxillosus)

The Golden Dorado is also called the Tiger of the River or Pirayu by the natives, it's Argentinas national fish. Known for its superb fighting spirit, with acrobatic leaps, powerful strikes, and line stretching runs. The name Dorado (Golden) refers to its beautiful colors, gold, orange, and black, which produce spectacular flashes when it jumps.

The Dorado take the fly hard, and are famous for their jumping abilities, and unstoppable runs. Their sharp teeth, and powerful jaws will bend out hooks, and cut wires. This fish hits like a tuna and jumps like a baby tarpon, making this type of fishing similar to saltwater angling.

Despite having Salminus in its scientific name, the dorado is not related to any species of salmon, nor to the saltwater fish also called Dorado (Mahi Mahi).

Small Dorados are best described as a prehistoric Trout, with a huge head, and powerful jaws. Larger Dorados, normally hunt alone, and are very active in late hours (dusk). The largest fish on record is believed to be a close 75 Lbs.

In some places on a good day, you may expect to catch around 10 to 12 Dorados, between 4 to 12 pounds. Due to its bonny mouth; you will lose as many fish as you land, or more. Remember that hooks must be razor sharp.
